Reflection on Finding Peace from God in Creatures

Imagine this scenario: A guy comes home from work and is mentally exhausted and feeling a little low, so he pours himself a small glass of wine and sits on the deck for a pick-me-up.

Is what this man did okay?  Or should he have tried to pick himself up in the Lord?  Would it have been okay if he asked the Lord to revive him through the glass of wine and relaxation on the deck?  Or would this have not been okay, because he would not have engaged in a more "spiritual" practice like the Rosary or meditation on a passage of Scripture?

Please let me know what you think in the comments below.  This is something with which I have struggled for a while, and while I think I have come to a resolution on it, I would like to hear your insights.  Let us discuss faith.

  1. The Lord gave us wine to be used rightly. One gless would not be wrong. I do not believe that the one glass will cause a release or pick me up as the man may think. It is most likely that the seating down on the deck and taking the break from the preasures of life that really reliefs the stress. Try drinking a glass of wine while doing something stressful and you will not find relief. God calls us to relax and if the Word is in you relief will come. Blaise

    1. In my struggle with this sort of thing, I have come to this: All good things have been given to us by God and can be used to bring us closer to him provided we refer them to him. So, in the example above, if the guy refers the glass of wine and relaxation to the Lord, then it is a form of prayer and may bring peace to his disquieted heart. If he doesn't refer them to the Lord, and looks to them as an end in themselves, then he is misusing them.
